We were nominated under the category Best Social Action Project, sponsored by The Mercers' Company, and shortlisted to the top 3 alongside two amazing UK based charities Caritas Bakhita House and Jericho Community Project - Ignition Project

We were incredibly honoured to be nominated, to know that the work we do as a community, was being recognised amognst the best projects in the UK. We were blown over when it was announced that we had won the Gold award!

Here is an article by The Salvation Army's magazine 'The War Cry' about the award.

Wedding Party Donate to Joel

We were astonished when a previous volunteer got in touch to share that he recently got married and asked wedding guests to donate to Joel instead of wedding gifts. We interviewed him for our Autumn newsletter, but incase you missed it here it is

Michael and Marie’s Fundraising Story

Former volunteer Michael came to Joel via KCAH after discussing the Churches Winter Shelter. “I first shadowed (at Joel) in October 2014, and then joined the main rota from November 2014 until October 2015 (when I moved away)".

What are your happiest / most interesting memories at Joel?

A key memory was first meeting Dan and the guests on the training day. It was very down to earth and open, which was great to see a room full of trust rather than a more “corporate” charity feel. Good memories from working in the shelter included: Jeff ridiculing my cooking skills and then showing me a few seasoning and chopping techniques; hearing stories from a number of guests and seeing them starting to open up to people; watching ex-residents transition from guest into volunteers.

When did you get married, and what inspired you to ask your wedding guests to donate to Joel?

We were married in May 2016 at Henley registry office, and then held a humanist celebration at the weekend with friends and family. Both me and Marie didn’t want gifts at the wedding (we’re trying to get rid of possessions not have more)!

So we naturally thought it made sense to have donations for charities that were close to us. Half the donations went to Joel and the other half to Great Ormond Street Children’s hospital. I enjoyed volunteering at Joel and found it the most “real” volunteering I’ve ever done.

A huge THANK YOU to Michael and Marie’s wedding guests who donated a grand total of £540!
